‘Other’ cyclists

For a small town Rotorua certainly produces its fair share of world quality riders. On this page Kiwibikes salutes these riders, and where possible we provide links to their blogs or websites.

If your favourite local isn’t here, check out the real stars – the Kiwibiker family!

Julian Dean

Julian Dean

Probably the best roadie to come from Rotorua (oh ok, Waihi, but Rotorua is his off-season base), and a European pro since 1999.  Click here for one of the best diaries from the peleton.

Clinton Avery

Nice young fella just getting a foothold in European riding – click here for his website.

Sam Bewley

Currently riding with Lance Armstrong! Wicked. Click here for his updates.

Sarah Walker

This double World Champion BMX rider’s been seen on a mountain-bike lately and doing very well indeed. Sarah’s website is here.

Mark Lieshman and Nic Leary

Cabin and Nic

The dynamic duo – husband and wife multisport legends Nic and Mark ‘Cabin’ Leishman keep a great blog of their crazy adventures.  Usually bikes are involved! Click here for the laughs.

Garth Weinberg

Garth Weinberg

Definitely one of the more colourful characters in NZ cycling, Garth’s best known for his single speed exploits and for generally being insanely tough.  He’s done the Rotorua-Taupo flyer on a Kiwibikes modified Raleigh-20 (single speed of course) and won all sorts of Single Speed races – from Karapoti to the national champs. RATs profile on him here.

Sonia Foote

Sonia Foote

You have to love a rider who heads up her blog posts with titles such as ‘Munted’ and ‘Poopy’.  As a new mum we’re unsure of her future racing plans but we love her whatever she does – like being the first woman home in the 2008 Xterra! Sonia’s blog here.
